Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 stands to break a number of sales records, but will it be the best-selling game in history? Many retailers have noted that pre-sales were through the roof on the game. Amazon said their pre-order sales were 50% higher than that of GTA4 while Play.com reported that it was getting more than 150 pre-orders per minute running up to the launch. Some analysts believe the game could sell an upwards of 10 million copies globally by Christmas. Many believe Modern Warfare 2 will in fact be the biggest selling game ever.
“We’re already seeing it bully other name-brand competitors into pushing their release dates back rather than risk going head-to-head in the same launch window,” said analyst Scott Steinberg of Digital Trends.
The game has also received criticism for the amount of violence in it. It even has a screen warning gamers of civilian massacre that the gamer takes part of in the game. In response, Activision said the massacre scene was “not representative of overall experience.”
Despite the criticism and somewhat negative press coverage it received leading up to the launch, Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision, described it as “one of the largest entertainment launches of any media of all time.”
