Steam Gets Updated, Beta Now Available

Valve has announced a new version of Steam which is immediately available in public beta.

This opt-in beta is available immediately to all Steam users. If users already have Steam installed on their computer, they can take part in the beta by clicking this link (steam://open/settings) and then selecting "UI Update" under Beta Participation. If they don't have Steam installed, they can download it here (http://store.steampowered.com/). To preview the new Steam client without taking part in the beta, a complete rundown of the new features is available here (http://store.steampowered.com/uiupdate/).

With the new Steam release, gamers will now be able to see which games their friends have purchased directly within the Steam storefront. News outlets now have the ability to reach the Steam community through the new client's News aggregator functionality. Those organizations interested can contact Doug Lombardi at lombardi@valvesoftware.com.

With users purchasing more and more games through Steam, new methods of library management were needed. The new client introduces library customization tools to help gamers sort, group, and find games in libraries which for some hardcore players contain hundreds of titles. In addition to having lots of games, gamers needed methods of tracking all of their achievements in a standardized cross-game fashion, which is now possible with the new release. (more...)

Darksiders is a pretty good game, but it's about to get even gooder because Vigil is releasing the much-anticipated screen-tearing patch. The update is coming this Wednesday around 2AM PST, and, as usual, it'll come in the form of an auto-update on Xbox Live. Vigil didn't announce if the patch will address any other issues plaguing the game, but the screen-tearing was the most problematic, so it's good to see it's getting fixed.

"To everyone, we really appreciate your feedback and hope you know that we're paying attention to all of it," the developer added on its blog.

Check out our Darksiders review in the meantime.

Team Fortress 2 War Update: ‘The Scotch Resistance’ and ‘The Equalizer’

by Tyler Treat Dec 17, 2009 3:57 AM CST
filed under news, pc

More news from the frontline. The new melee weapon for the Soldier has been revealed as well as the new sticky bomb gun for the Demoman. The Soldier is getting a pick axe called "The Equalizer," which becomes more deadly the more damage you take. "Get close enough to death, and you will become Death himself," the update reads. The Soldier is also getting a "Buff Banner," which boosts a rage meter that, when full, lets you pull out your bugle and rally the troops. For 14 seconds, every teammate who rallies round your flag will deal mini-crits.

The Demoman's new gun, the Scotch Resistance, can lay down twice as many sticky bombs and destroy enemy sticky bombs. It also lets you detonate specific groups of bombs instead of having to set them off all at once. However, the SR has a 0.4-second priming rate, making it less useful for air-bursts and close range combat.

For more information, including new Achievements, check out the War page.
