The Ten Best Narrative Video Game Masterpieces

feature

Every so often, a game comes along with a story that truly blows us away. We're very thankful for these games, for they help us get through our mundane job of playing video games, specifically all the crappy ones that no one else wants to play. That's why we thought it would be appropriate to give the best of these games the recognition they deserve. This list only includes 10 games. Not because there's only ten games with excellent narrative experiences, but because ten just seems like a good number, and I don't feel like writing a list of 100 titles (call me lazy or call me smart, either would be correct). There may have been hair-pulling and fist-throwing during the selection process, but we believe we have come up with a very strong list of narrative masterpieces -- not definitive, but damn good.

In the spirit of top 10 lists, review-aggregating website Metacritic has compiled a list of the top 10 most highly rated games for 2009. Check out the list below:

Associated Press’ Top 10 Video Games of the Year

Yesterday we had a post about TIME Magazine's list of the top 10 video games of the year. The Associated Press also released a list, which happens to lack a certain game who's name rhymes with "fall love moody: postmodern snorestair who." Terrible rhyme, I know. Without further adieu, check out the AP's list below and tell us what you think:

  1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
  2. Assassin’s Creed II
  3. Dragon Age: Origins
  4. Batman: Arkham Asylum
  5. inFamous
  6. Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
  7. Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story
  8. Borderlands
  9. Forza Motorsport 3
  10. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

I'd have to say it's better than TIME's, but there are certainly some questionable choices.

TIME Magazine’s Top 10 Video Games of 2009

time

TIME Magazine released its comprehensive top 10 lists of pretty much everything today. Of course, we all went straight to the video games part. Guess what was number one? Check out the full list below:

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  2. Batman Arkham Asylum
  3. DJ Hero
  4. Borderlands
  5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  6. Geo-Defense Swarm
  7. Scribblenauts
  8. Halo 3: ODST
  9. Assassin's Creed 2
  10. Uncharted 2

I would disagree with a number of those selections and their placement. I definitely think Uncharted 2 deserves better than the 10 spot, and some of those games don't even deserve to be on the list.

Within the flood of video games that get released each year, there are a few that don't quite make it. Referred to as "vaporware," these games have such a large and loyal fanbase but are ultimately shelved due to budget constraints or other "internal issues." Others we don't even know about until it's too late. Below are ten games we feel would've been great if they had survived their development woes.
