NHL 2K11 in Development After All?

Although it seemed likely that NHL 2K11 was getting canned by Take-Two, it appears that there still might be hope. A recent ad listing, picked up by a Kotaku tipster, points out that 2K Sports is seeking musicians for the NHL 2K11 soundtrack.

"2K Sports is looking for a band who can provide a song to help round out the NHL 2K11 soundtrack," reads the listing. "NHL 2K11 is the latest in a series of critically acclaimed hockey games, due out in September 2010." Bands that are chosen will receive $3,000 compensation (as well as some nifty exposure).

The posting expired January 20, and it was created January 6, which was well after 2K's announcement saying the company was "evaluating" its sports portfolio.

NBA 2K10 Breaks Two Million

2K Sports announced today that NBA 2K10 has sold over two million units worldwide, an astonishing 60% increase over 2K9's sales last year.

"We're proud of what we've accomplished this year with NBA 2K10, and this milestone is another fantastic reason to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the NBA 2K franchise," said 2K president Christoph Hartmann. "We would like to thank all of our loyal fans for their dedicated support and look forward to the continued success of this title."

What's perhaps more surprising is Mike Wang is returning to NBA 2K developer Visual Concepts after working at EA Canada for 18 months. Wang was the lead designer for NBA Live, and he was a huge part of NBA Live 10's success. It doesn't end there. Wang also had some harsh words for EA Sports, ESPN reports.

2K Sports Has So Much Money to Throw Around, It Wants You to Throw It for Them

2K Sports announced today that it apparently has so much money, that it will give a million dollars to the first person who throws a verifiable perfect game in MLB 2K10 before May 2. Either they're confident no one can do it, or they just have so much money they don't know what to do with it. I'm not so inclined it's the latter of the two.

"You don't see too many perfect games thrown in MLB 2K, but we've seen it happen," said Jason Argent, marketing VP for 2K Sports. "Our goal is to celebrate and highlight Major League Baseball 2K10's superior pitching and hitting mechanics this season, while also giving one of our loyal fans the thrilling opportunity to be rewarded with a lot of money."

Start practicing because the contest begins March 2 and, as I said, ends May 2, so you have two months to earn a cool $1M. For more info, including the official rules, check out the contest page.

NHL 2K11 Possibly Canceled

Yesterday we found out that Take-Two took a pretty big hit this year, losing $137.9 million. Is 2K Sports, a T2 subsidiary, to blame? It's apparent that the poor sales of the company's baseball games is partly at fault for the publisher's financial struggling, and the latest word on the street is that NHL 2K11 is getting canned because of it.

Take-Two published its Q4 2009 fiscal results yesterday, and along with it, a release schedule of games. NHL 2K11 was not included on that list, a strong indication that it's been axed. Chris Littman at The Sporting News’ FirstCuts blog asked 2K Sports about the missing title. A 2K rep made this comment:

We are currently in the process of evaluating our sports portfolio and have not announced any new NHL titles at this time.

That just about puts the nail in the coffin for the NHL 2K franchise I'm afraid. It looks like it's going to be taking the route of the College Hoops series, which suffered a similar death.
