Steam Gets Updated, Beta Now Available

Valve has announced a new version of Steam which is immediately available in public beta.

This opt-in beta is available immediately to all Steam users. If users already have Steam installed on their computer, they can take part in the beta by clicking this link (steam://open/settings) and then selecting "UI Update" under Beta Participation. If they don't have Steam installed, they can download it here (http://store.steampowered.com/). To preview the new Steam client without taking part in the beta, a complete rundown of the new features is available here (http://store.steampowered.com/uiupdate/).

With the new Steam release, gamers will now be able to see which games their friends have purchased directly within the Steam storefront. News outlets now have the ability to reach the Steam community through the new client's News aggregator functionality. Those organizations interested can contact Doug Lombardi at lombardi@valvesoftware.com.

With users purchasing more and more games through Steam, new methods of library management were needed. The new client introduces library customization tools to help gamers sort, group, and find games in libraries which for some hardcore players contain hundreds of titles. In addition to having lots of games, gamers needed methods of tracking all of their achievements in a standardized cross-game fashion, which is now possible with the new release. (more...)

Movie Exec: Males Playing Games Instead of Watching Films

According to Peter Guber, chairman of Mandalay Pictures and former Sony Pictures chief, males are opting to stay home and play video games rather than go to the movies, which is why chick flicks are raking in the cash.

"A lot of young males are spending much more time on the internet, games and UFC," Guber told The Sunday Telegraph. "They have not abandoned movies, but they have diminished as a target, while the female audience has remained robust."

Movies like Valentine's Day and Dear John have been at the top of the box office lately, suggesting both an increase in female attendance and a decrease in male attendance.

Although I'd argue that the reason males aren't going to the movies is because the selection has been utter crap lately. Shutter Island, Valentine's Day, or Dear John? I think I'd rather stay home and play games.

Ubisoft: Red Steel 2 Can Bring Core Gamers to Wii

by Tyler Treat Feb 23, 2010 4:31 PM CST

The Wii has been known to cater to the less-than-hardcore gamer, but Ubisoft says it can bring core gamers to the system with Red Steel 2. Bold words indeed. Creative director Jason Vandenberghe made the statement while speaking with CVG.

"I think we've got a great chance of bringing people back to Wii," he said. "If you haven't played on your Wii for a while we've got the game for you.

Vandenberge criticized developers who categorized gamers into two groups: hardcore and family friendly. According to him, gamers are gamers, each with varying tastes and preferences.

"Personally, I call this the great hardcore Wii Jihad," he continued. "I don't really care about the religious war! Some developers who are making hardcore games for the Wii made a big deal about the separation of church and state, saying (puts on deep voice) 'there's hardcore and there's family friendly.'

"F*** those guys! I don't feel that way. I think there are gamers and there are gamers of different opinions and different tastes so the goal was to create games that gamers want and to see how many people like it."

I'm not sure if I can agree with Vandenberge on this one. It's hard to know how much success Red Steel 2 will see. The Wii's userbase consists primarily of what some call "casual" gamers, and this title is not going to be on their radar. Then again, I guess it depends on what  your definition of "success" is, but the industry standard would be the break-even point. 300,000 copies? Hardly. There have been multiple "hardcore" games on the Wii, such as The Conduit and Mad World, yet they have have been poorly received. Third-party games simply don't do well on the Wii for the most part. That's why developers are shying away from the Wii.

The Future of Online Gaming

feature

Online gaming has come on leaps and bounds over the years, and it has many guises. My first online experience is born from when I jumped into a multiplayer game of Halo 2 in 2006, and I was impressed. Gone were the days of my boredom taking over as each AI-controlled enemy followed a predictable and predetermined course of action. If they were designed to be a difficult opponent, they simply fired more frequently and with improved accuracy.

Ever imagine yourself hitting keys and not all of them registering as pressed? Like, in a time of utter crisis, when you're hands are sprawled all out on your keyboard, the tool of your enemy's destruction? That's perhaps the worst thing that can happen to a gamer, so Microsoft has unleashed the SideWinder X4, which allows, according to Tom's Guide, up to 26 consecutive keystrokes.

Check out their full review, but you may find that ghosting isn't an issue...or, considering the rig you're on now, it may be your worst issue.
