According to its developer, 2K Czech, Mafia II is going to set the new benchmark for open-world games. It will have a more engaging narrative, and the level of detail in the game is "amazing." Speaking with Inc Gamers, the game's senior producer Denby Grace discussed why he thinks "no other open-world city comes close."

"As well as the story, the level of detail and realization of the world really is an amazing technical achievement for the team here at 2K Czech," said Grace. "No other open world city comes close with the texture quality, attention to detail and destructibility of our environments."

Mafia II is set to release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC sometime between May and July of this year.

You Got Sand in My Diablo!

It's been way too long since we last received some new Diablo III assets, but today's our lucky day. A fresh, and rather substantial, batch of screens went out from Blizzard's finest, and, as usual, it looks brilliant.

There's plenty of hell to be had in Diablo III, but you'll have to wait. It's not out for a long time, not even before 2011. At least we've got Torchlight to hold us over, and it won't be too long before we're frying our brains with StarCraft II. Just be patient, young one.

Earlier this morning, a German Warner Bros. website published an October 2010 release date for Batman: Arkham Asylum 2. It has since been taken down, and Warner Bros. has confirmed the release window for the Rocksteady sequel to be "not October."

"The 'German web site tags Arkham Asylum 2 for October' story is based on inaccurate information on the German Warner site," a rep told VG247. "That information was taken down a couple of hours ago, accordingly.

"We haven't announced a release date for the sequel to Batman Arkham Asylum yet, and I'll let you know as soon as we have any news.

The spokesperson later confirmed that the release date was "not October." Hopefully we'll get that 11-month time frame narrowed down a bit soon, eh?

Last month, voice actor Jon St. John hinted that Duke Nukem Forever might still be in production. Yesterday, a new gameplay video, allegedly of the game, emerged. It's difficult to know for sure, but it appears to be legitimate. What do you reckon?

The video quality is shite, but it's better than nothing, right? RIGHT?

Cryptic Would ‘Love’ to Bring Star Trek Online to Consoles

Star Trek Online is just a day away from its PC debut, and the developers, Cryptic Studios, are already thinking about the future. They would "love" to bring the game to consoles. Saying that it's "definitely" possible, but they won't be rushing for a PS3 or Xbox 360 release, Executive Producer Craig Zinkievich told CVG.

"We would love to get STO to the console," Zinkievich said. "At launch, it will just be available for the PC, but here at Cryptic, we want our games across multiple platforms. But we'll have to see how Star Trek does and then secondly, we want to do it justice and not hurry something along just to get it on the console."

The interesting point-and-click puzzle game from seven Czech designers, Machinarium, released back in October, and it was very well-received. As a result, the game's getting a collector's edition, which includes some cool stuff for a pretty good price. Here's the list of goods:

  • 54-page walkthrough
  • Poster
  • Concept art booklet
  • Soundtrack CD with five never-before-heard bonus tracks

All for just £19.99, which is some alien currency.

Mass Effect 2 Has Effective Launch in UK

Mass Effect 2 released stateside last week to much praise, but how did it fare across the pond? According to data from GfK Chart-Track, it fared pretty well. Almost doubling the original's sales on the Xbox 360 and tripling the PC version's within the first week of release, I'd say it's doing all right. EA says it had shipped over two million units worldwide over the weekend.

With that in mind, it's no surprise to see the game at the number one spot, knocking Just Dance to number to and Modern Warfare 2 to number three. Check the full top 20 after the break.

EA Planning Dante’s Inferno Commercial During Super Bowl

On Super Bowl Sunday, two days before the game hits store shelves, EA will introduce football fans to Dante’s Inferno with the company’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial. The 30-second spot, entitled “Hell Awaits”, premieres during the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLIV broadcast on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 7.

As traditional advertisers withdraw from this year’s big game, EA will use the Super Bowl as a platform to expose nearly 100 million viewers to Dante’s Inferno within the coveted 18-34 year old male demographic. EA joins perennial advertisers Anheuser-Busch and Mazda as well as other newcomers to the Super Bowl advertising scene such as Time Warner cable channel TruTV, Sprint Nextel's Boost Mobile and Kia Motors.

“Even within the spectrum of live sports events, the Super Bowl stands apart, almost as a national holiday,” said Frank Gibeau, president at EA. “The Super Bowl is a bull’s-eye in terms of cross-over to our core demographic and the reach is outstanding. Not only does it draw 100 million viewers, but most people watch the Super Bowl live, a rarity in the world of DVRs. While digital outreach to Facebook, Twitter, and online bloggers is a core part of our marketing strategy, we felt that advertising during the Super Bowl is an excellent way to introduce this new IP to a massive cross-section of people who are likely already familiar with the dark and twisted “Divine Comedy.”

Bad Company 2 to Look Even Better When It’s Released

As you know, the PC beta (and Xbox 360 demo) for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 released late last week. I have been thoroughly impressed by it. In my preview, I noted that the graphics were quite impressive, but according to DICE, Bad Company 2 will look even better when it releases March 2.

"The 'high' texture detail level isn't implemented in #BFBC PC beta," tweeted DICE rendering architect Johan Andersson. "Is in the final release so will be a bit sharper."

This means we can expect even more detailed textures in the full release. Andersson has also noted that the final build will be getting quite a bit of optimization, meaning the frame rate will be tightened up.
