Modnation Racers (PSP) Preview

When the PS3 version of Modnation Racers was first shown off at E3 last year, I was skeptical as to how the game would traslate over to the PSP.  After I got some one on one time  with a preview build of the game however, I no longer have any doubts that the portable version of Modnation Racers is as competent a title as its PS3 counter part.

As you should know by now, the Heavy Rain demo is available for download (you just have to jump through some hoops). I've given the demo a thorough playthrough, so I thought I'd give my impressions. It's a very interesting game,  and one that's definitely worth a close and careful examination.

I took part in a conference call earlier today with some of the people from 2K Marin and Digital Extremes, the developers of BioShock 2 and its multiplayer portion respectively. Included in the discussion were creative director Jordan Thomas, lead designer Zak McClendon, lead environment artist Hoagy De La Plante, multiplayer art director Mat Tremblay and multiplayer lead programmer Jesse Attard. Since the call was not transcribed, parts of the discussion are paraphrased. They talk about design decisions, gameplay and narrative aspects and much more.

The open PC beta for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 kicked off yesterday, and, of course, being the avid FPS gamer I am, I delved into it. I have played a little bit of the first Bad Company, but not substantially, making me a bit of a noob to the franchise spinoff. I've had time to play quite a bit of Bad Company 2's beta, and I can safely say I am impressed. Read on for my full impressions of it.

Hands-on with Razer’s Motion Controller

feature

At CES, we had the chance to get our hands on Razer/Sixense's new motion controller for PC, which to this point does not have an official name. These controllers are pretty sweet peripherals. Using magnetic technology, they have significantly more accurate accelerometers than Nintendo's Wii remote, meaning they don't require all the recalibrations the Wii often does.

We were able to play Left 4 Dead 2 using one of the Nunchuk-shaped devices, and it worked surprisingly well. The demo showed off a number of different ways in which the controller could be used -- as a standard mouse with motion functions (swinging it for melee attacks, etc.) to more motion-centric designs.

MAG Beta Impressions: MAGnificent or Not?

feature

I had a chance to check out the MAG beta this past week. Certainly the game showed potential from the demos I had seen, so how does it hold up in action? Considering the game releases January 26 (in North America at least), it's pretty clear that this beta is fairly representative of the final product. Thus, I will describe my experience to you in full, and I will hold nothing back.

Mass Effect 2 Preview: First Hour of Gameplay

feature

by James Pikover Dec 21, 2009 12:20 PM CST
filed under features, pc, previews, xbox 360

Most previews tell you about the game as a whole, with limited information so nothing's spoiled. They describe gameplay mechanics, graphics, characters, essentially everything you see in a demo or trailer, but in greater detail. It's a look at what game developers and publishers want the consumer to see, not necessarily what ends up being sold on the market.

This isn't going to be a typical preview. I had the opportunity to play the first hour of Mass Effect 2, to which I'll describe utterly and entirely. In doing so, I will spoil that entire hour, give my thoughts on everything, from gameplay to storyline and dialog to weapons. If you don't want Mass Effect 2 spoiled for you, don't bother reading this article. If, however, you want to know more about 2010's first blockbuster RPG, read on at your own discretion.
