New Yorkers are invited to leave their 3D glasses at home this March 26th as Nintendo will be hosting a midnight launch spectacular at Best Buy's Union Square location for the 3D screen enabled Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo put out a media alert this morning inviting New Yorkers to join in the celebrations with 3DS samplings, music, games and other activities meant to hype you up about the new handheld.

Reggie Fils-Aime will be present at the launch event (yay!)  along with Michael Vitelli of Best Buy of America (eh.) The first 300 people in line will be eligible to recieve a special carrying case free with the purchase of their 3DS, so if you are in the big apple and itching to drop a cool $250 on 3D gaming's new hotness it's definately worth checking out.

When Mega Microgame$!'s WarioWare series first debuted on the Gameboy Advanced it took a new direction with the minigames genre that hadn't yet been explored. There hadn't been to many games before it that featured minigame collections in which each game took less than five seconds to complete. This was the first of its kind; quick, short bursts of gameplay that required lightning fast reflexes to complete within a very short amount of time. With WarioWare D.I.Y., the job of creating these minigames is left to the player's hands. Does it work?

Sony announced a new God of War game for PSP today. Developed by Ready at Dawn Studios (the same team behind Chains of Olympus), God of War: Ghost of Sparta will feature our beloved Kratos, depicting his rise to power sometime after the events of the first God of War on PS2.

"Excitement for the God of War franchise is at an all-time high and we're thrilled to continue that momentum with God of War: Ghost of Sparta," said SCEA product marketing VP Scott Steinberg. "This new adventure will showcase Kratos on PSP like never before in an experience that fans and newcomers can enjoy on the go, anytime, anywhere."

Ghost of Sparta supposedly boasts 25% more gameplay content than Chains of Olympus, and it will kick the number of on-screen enemies up a notch. It's expected to ship later this year.

Modnation Racers (PSP) Preview

When the PS3 version of Modnation Racers was first shown off at E3 last year, I was skeptical as to how the game would traslate over to the PSP.  After I got some one on one time  with a preview build of the game however, I no longer have any doubts that the portable version of Modnation Racers is as competent a title as its PS3 counter part.

Rumor: Nintendo 3DS May Launch in October

There's word going about over at CVG that Nintendo will be releasing the 3DS, the 3D touch screen follow up to the DS, as early as October this year. This comes by way of "industry sources" who informed CVG that the company was prepping to launch the platform this October, putting it in line to directly compete with the launch of Natal this holiday season.

CVG mentioned that a long time news source noted how it was "... a surprise - we were expecting it much closer to Christmas. But I suppose it gives Nintendo the opportunity to get it front and centre in people's minds nice and early."

If the information is true, it would put the launch of the 3DS around six months earlier than expected. Of course this could still just be nothing more than a rumor unless Nintendo announces something at this year's E3.

Resident Evil 4 For iPad Doesn’t Look Half Bad

So the iPad is out now if the none stop coverage on practically every single tech blog wasn't enough to clue you in. With the release of Apple's touch pad wonder many games meant to utilize the added power and screen real estate of the iPad have made their appearance including both new titles and upscaled versions of iPhone games. One among them is Resident Evil 4 which, quite frankly, doesn't look all that bad visually.

Capcom ported over RE 4 for the iPhone last year and the end result was a bit lacking on the visual and control side. Since I don't own an iPad I can't say whether the latter issue has improved much with the larger screen, but if you tak a gander at the screen shots Kotaku was kind enough to post its definately apparent that the game benefits from the added rendering capabilities of the iPad.

Resident Evil 4 for iPad is currently available for download on the iPad App. store for $12.99. If anyone gets some hands on time with the game fill us in on what you think.

Sharp Shows Off Glasses-less 3D Display, Possibly One Used For Nintendo’s 3DS

3D displays as we know them require often uncomfortable and dorky looking glasses to achieve the illusion of depth. When Nintendo announced the 3DS last month one of the mystery questions regarding the handheld's features was how it would pull off "3D effects without the need for any special glasses." One look at Sharp's new 3.4 inch 2D - 3D touchscreen display and a lot of that mystery is answered.

The 3D display sports a 480x854 resolution that lights up at an impressive  brightness. It can be used as a touch screen, which falls nicely within the functional requirements of the 3DS mind you, and features a 1000:1 contrast ratio. Akihabra News already got a chance to see the display in action and came away quite impressed:

Finally I had the chance to enjoy Sharp’s new 2D/3D LCD that does not require 3D glasses. What I have seen so far has been quite disappointing, Sorry Fujifilm, but Sharp’s new technology is REALLY impressive and I cannot wait to have such a screen in my 3DS ! Not only the colors and brightness are good as advertised, but also the 3D Ghost-less Effect on this LCD is really impressive...Sharp have succeeded to do what Sony and Panasonic did without the need for 3D Glasses!

Apparently Sharp has already started mass production of the display for mobile devices. As per what mobile devices specifically, well, no official word has been given. It looks like the glove fits but we won't know for certain until Nintendo shows off the 3DS at E3.

Sam and Max Coming to iPad Via Episodic Games

filed under handhelds, ipad, news

There's a lot of iPad hysteria on the internet lately but aside from tech blogs bleeding the subject dry there is some noteworthy news on the gaming front. If you're planning on getting an iPad yourself then you might be happy to know that fan favorite adventure game duo, Sam and Max, will have their own game available for purchase on the iPad App. Store.

According to Kotaku, an iPad game titled "Sam & Max Episode 1: The Penal Zone" is listed on the store which appears to be an iPad version of "The Devil's Playhouse", a third episodic run of the adventure series. The series is said to run for five episodes released on a monthly basis according to the games developer Telltale.

The listed price on the store is $9.99, meaning that buying each episode as they become available can add up to a fairly pretty penny by the end of the series.
