Earlier this month, a group of pirates claimed to have hacked the "unhackable" PS3. Although we haven't heard much on that front in a while, a different hacker, the same one responsible for the iPhone jailbreak, has claimed to have broken the PS3. George "GeoHot" Hotz, says he has gained read/write access to the system memory as well as HV-level access to the processor. To put it in layman's terms, Hotz puts it simply: "I have hacked the PS3."
"3 years, 2 months, 11 days...that's a pretty secure system," he wrote on his blog. "[The hack] took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.
"As far as the exploit goes, I'm not revealing it yet," Hotz added. "The theory isn't really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder."
Obviously, it's kind of hard to verify the validity of Hotz's claim, considering that up to this point, the system has not been fully hacked, and many believe it really is unhackable. However, GeoHot is a notable hacker, so it certainly is plausible.
